Candidate Stories: Director of Development at Encircle

One of the best parts of our job is getting to meet amazing candidates. In our newest series, we’re profiling standout placements so everyone else can meet the stellar folks we interact with every day.

Our mission is to connect top talent to jobs at exceptional organizations, and our recent placement of Garrett Barnes as Encircle’s Director of Development embodies this mission perfectly. Encircle, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ youth and families, has selected an incredible leader in Garrett, who shares their values and is poised to strengthen donor relationships and elevate the organization’s impact.

A member of our team sat down with Garrett to ask him about his experience. Below is the transcript of that call:

How did SEARCH Group Partners help you in the hiring process?

I’ve worked with a recruiting firm before as a candidate, and I was employed at a search firm when I first moved to Utah, so I’m familiar with what recruiters do. But what stood out was their responsiveness. There was the typical back-and-forth at the beginning, but toward the offer stage, Jess would even text me on weekends, which is important because candidates are anxious to know where they stand in the process. The communication was fast, professional, and top-notch.

As someone who has worked for a search firm in the valley, how do you think SEARCH does anything differently compared to other groups you’ve worked with?

Yes, they really advocated for me. They told Encircle they liked me and pushed my name forward ahead of the normal schedule. SEARCH’s candidate advocacy, making sure I understood the role’s uniqueness, and ensuring it was a fit from my end before moving forward, really stood out.

What would you say to someone considering working with a recruiter like SEARCH Group Partners?

Respect both sides. You never know when you might need a recruiter. If you’re rude, they’ll remember, and when you need them, that could affect your chances.

Recruiters should also respect candidates and connect with them even if there’s no immediate role because you never know when they might be the perfect fit.

What excites you most about your new role at Encircle?

The team. I’ve had individual meetings with the executive director, operations, and marketing teams, and we share a similar philosophy toward Encircle’s mission. I’m excited to reconnect with high-profile donors and engage new corporate donors. I’ve done my research, know the organization’s strengths and opportunities, and I’m eager to bridge any divides and capitalize on untapped opportunities.

Anything else you want to add?

Just a big shout-out to Jess and Ema. Their level of communication and respect was above and beyond, understanding my philosophy of wanting clarity. They didn’t stretch the process out unnecessarily, which I really appreciated. They treated me with so much respect.
